Sarah Loughry Is The Founder and CEO Of Em Dash Content Studio

 

My name is Sarah Loughry. I’m the Founder and CEO of Em Dash Content Studio. We are a boutique team of expert writers and strategists that help our clients reach page one of Google and establish themselves as though leaders in their space. 

We are two and a half years old. In that short time, we’ve scaled to over 25 clients, landed on page one of Google for most, and created a stellar team of 7. Thanks to amazing platforms, like Dreamers and Doers, I’ve been featured in Motherly, Thrive, Nasdaq, Authority Magazine, and more. 

What motivated you to become an entrepreneur? Is it something you always wanted?

Did I always want to be a business owner? Probably, but what was most important was being passionate for the work that I do and truly enjoy it. That led me down a very non-linear path. I wasn’t afraid to pivot and try new things. I worked in retail management, was a co-host for a syndicated morning radio show, worked in healthcare, had a stint in post-secondary education, event management, and even fitness. Was I flaky? Nope. I was determined to find what I loved. 

For a long time, I thought I wanted to make it to the executive level in corporate marketing. I made it there, and hated it. So, I quit and started freelance writing. That move is what led me to Em Dash Content Studio. Honestly, I still have to pinch myself. I’ve never been happier and more proud of the work that we do. 

When did you consider yourself a success? Did you ever have to deal with the imposter syndrome? How do you overcome the imposter syndrome?

Part of being a business owner, I’ve discovered, is that it’s day by day. There are some days I feel very successful and others where I’m nervous I’m doing all the wrong things. Imposter syndrome is still very prevalent for me. 

Overcoming it means pushing through and reminding yourself that everyone feels this way at some point or another. Celebrating the wins helps too. In my experience, I’m so busy that I’m onto the next thing before taking time to really recognize the successful moment. 

How do you push through your worst times? What are some tips on how we can motivate ourselves when we’re not really feeling it?

I just went through a really tough time in my business last quarter. Though it was hard it taught me a lot about myself and how to move forward. 

  1. Everything is temporary. 

  2. A bad day doesn’t have to mean a bad week. A bad week doesn’t have to mean a bad month. 

  3. Every other business has been in this exact same situation at one point or another. You are absolutely not alone. Keep pushing. 

  4. Get up. Stop staring at the numbers or the client list or the projections. Go do something you can win right now? Is it laundry? Shopping? A coffee break? Staring at the negative can pull you deeper. Sometimes it’s good to give yourself a mental break. 

  5. Talk to other business owners. This was HUGE for me. Understanding that I was doing everything right and it was more the industry and not me.
