ABOUT CATHARINE MONTGOMERY
Catharine is a seasoned communications expert with deep expertise in education, environment and social justice issues. She founded Better Together after a successful career working in-house and at multiple communications agencies on numerous campaigns that have helped bring about social change. Throughout her career, Catharine has demonstrated a passion for supporting social justice efforts. She has worked at several agencies, including progressive communications startup 617MediaGroup, where she helped position partners in effectively engaging with stakeholders while equitably and effectively equipping and serving the community to address the need for reform. Her expertise in media outreach, stakeholder engagement, events, legislative affairs, and community involvement have all been integrated to support those disproportionately impacting communities of color and who are already stigmatized and under-resourced.
Catharine has also led internal DEI efforts at Burson-Marsteller, conceptualizing and executing a live-streamed employee forum across the U.S. on policing and race, and an external panel discussion, “At the Crossroads of Policing, Race and Media” to examine the influence of news and social media on Americans’ perceptions about police interactions with African Americans and others. She also led the agency’s Black Employee Resource Group and launched and led Burson-Marsteller Advantage Women, a global partner offering focused on helping organizations close the gender gap and create opportunities for women.
In addition, Catharine's efforts in environmental sustainability helped develop and build consensus for the first-ever, cruise industry-wide carbon reduction goal. She created a stewardship model for port destinations resulting in increased engagement in key European ports while marshaling a relationship with the City of Dubrovnik resulting in a historic private-public partnership. Throughout her career, Catharine has always displayed a careful approach to concise and effective messaging by clearly articulating the objectives, strategies, and tactics that lead to successful communications campaigns. She has led in the development of strategic plans, from the ground up, that not only changed perceptions, but resulted in ongoing behavior change. Additionally, she has had the opportunity to work with third-party stakeholders, which furthered her ability to communicate with all audiences.
Catharine holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and Marketing from Auburn University and an MBA from the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business. She successfully completed the Vital Voices Visionaries Program in Partnership with the Estée Lauder Emerging Leaders Fund. In addition, she is a member of CHIEF, Dreamers & Doers, The 10th House, Public Relations Society of America, the National Black MBA Association, the National Press Club, Like Minded Collective, Ladies Get Paid, Greater Washington Urban League and ColorComm. Catharine also volunteers for the Woman of Impact for Girls Inc. of the Washington Metro Area.
