Building a successful business comes with its fair share of setbacks. Can you share a time you faced a major obstacle and how you overcame it?
One of the biggest obstacles I faced was my struggle with dyslexia. Growing up, I was often told I would never go to college, which was incredibly disheartening. I remember feeling like the odds were stacked against me, but I was determined to prove them wrong. I learned to leverage my unique strengths, like my creativity and resilience, and I focused on developing effective strategies to manage my learning differences.
Additionally, transitioning from my full-time job to running my own business took a lot longer than I anticipated. There were moments when I doubted myself and questioned whether I was making the right choice. I realized that building a successful venture is a journey, not a race. I took my time to lay a solid foundation, develop my skills, and create a support system around me.
Ultimately, I embraced each challenge as an opportunity for growth. My dyslexia taught me the importance of persistence and finding creative solutions, and the slower transition helped me prepare mentally and emotionally for entrepreneurship. Today, I channel those experiences into my work, empowering others to overcome their own obstacles and achieve their dreams.
Work-life balance can be a constant struggle for entrepreneurs. How do you manage your time and maintain a healthy balance?
Oh, the elusive work-life balance! It can feel like a juggling act, especially when you’re the captain of your own ship. For me, it’s all about intentional scheduling. I treat my calendar like a sacred tool, blocking out not just work hours but also breaks for walks, gym time, or even just a moment to breathe. Knowing I have these rewards coming keeps me motivated during work blocks.
I’ve also trained myself to resist the urge to mindlessly scroll on Instagram. It’s easy to fall into that trap, but I now reserve my social media time for managing my own content. I used to spend hours texting back and forth about trivial things, and honestly, I just don’t have the bandwidth for that anymore. It's about focusing on what truly drives me forward and recognizing that my time is precious.
Can everyone become an entrepreneur? Why or why not?
This is a hard truth: not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. It requires a unique blend of skills, resilience, and a willingness to sacrifice—sometimes significantly. Not everyone is ready to invest the time and effort required or to lead amidst chaos. Some people thrive in a structured environment where they can clock out at 5 PM and enjoy their evenings. They may not be comfortable with the uncertainty and lack of structure that often comes with running your own business. And that’s perfectly okay!
Additionally, entrepreneurship can strain personal relationships. As you rise, some friends might feel left behind or even envious. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but sometimes, your circle will shrink as you focus on your growth. Embrace this change; surround yourself with those who uplift and inspire you. Remember, it’s about quality over quantity when it comes to your support system.
What is your biggest piece of advice for overcoming self-doubt?
Here’s the secret: follow the plan, not the feeling. Just go for it! Self-doubt and fear are normal—they’ll creep in, trying to sabotage your confidence. But when you show up for yourself every day, proving that you can tackle tough challenges, that’s when the magic happens.
Confidence doesn’t just appear; it grows from action. Every step you take diminishes the grip of self-doubt. So, take that leap! You are more capable than you realize.
How are you using your platform to empower other women or promote positive change?
I am deeply passionate about empowering women to feel strong—both mentally and physically. I want women to lift weights and feel that rush of power, and then carry that strength into the boardroom, ready to kick butt! Strength isn’t just about the gym; it’s about building a mindset that embraces challenges. I want every woman to realize that she can do hard things. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you cultivate through action. By sharing my journey and encouraging women to step out of their comfort zones, I aim to foster a community where we all lift each other up and break barriers together.
What is the most overrated or underrated thing in the world of entrepreneurship?
In my experience, one of the most underrated aspects of entrepreneurship is the importance of self-care and mental health. Many people believe that to succeed, you need to hustle relentlessly, sacrifice your personal life, and push through every challenge without pause. This mindset can lead to burnout, anxiety, and even depression, ultimately hindering your ability to lead effectively and innovate.
On the flip side, the most overrated thing might be the glorification of “the hustle.” We often hear stories of entrepreneurs who work 80-hour weeks and sleep in their offices. While hard work is undoubtedly crucial, it’s important to recognize that sustainable success comes from balance, self-awareness, and prioritizing your well-being.
True entrepreneurship is not just about grinding non-stop; it's about working smart, making time for reflection, and investing in your personal growth. When you take care of your mental and physical health, you can show up as your best self, make better decisions, and create a positive impact in your business and community.
