From Corporate Triathlons to Social Impact: How One Female Founder Built a Purpose-Driven Business and Empowered Women in Leadership
Hi, I'm Sandhya Sabapathy, the Global Head of Environment and Net Zero @Entain, and the Founder of Kaleidoscope. With a robust background in leading transformative ESG initiatives in global Fortune500 and FTSE100 corporations, I am passionate about integrating sustainability into business strategies. Kaleidoscope is a social venture dedicated to amplifying diverse voices in social impact and sustainability, driving meaningful change by embedding sustainable practices into every facet of our operations.
What initially sparked your passion for starting your own business?
Participating in a company-sponsored triathlon was a defining moment for me. Training for six months and being part of a global fundraising movement that raised millions of pounds showed me the power of collective action and corporate support for social causes. This experience inspired me to combine my passions for education and the environment with my professional life, leading me to found Kaleidoscope. It was the best decision I have made in my career so far, allowing me to work on what I truly care about every day.
Did you have any female founders you looked up to as role models?
Yes, I have always admired women like Sheryl Sandberg for her advocacy on women in leadership and Arianna Huffington for her work on wellness and resilience. Their journeys have been a source of inspiration, showing that it's possible to lead with both strength and compassion while making significant impacts in the business world.
What advice would you give to your younger self about starting a business?
I would tell my younger self to trust in her vision and not be afraid to take risks. The road to entrepreneurship is filled with challenges, but each obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace the journey, seek out mentors, and build a strong network of support. Most importantly, stay true to your values and passions.
Have you faced any gender-specific challenges in the startup world?
Absolutely. Gender bias is still prevalent in many areas of the business world, including startups. There have been times when my expertise and capabilities were underestimated simply because I am a woman. However, I've navigated these situations by consistently delivering results and demonstrating my value. Building a strong reputation and network has also been crucial in overcoming these challenges.
What practices have you found most effective for building a strong and supportive team culture?
Creating a strong and supportive team culture starts with clear communication and mutual respect. I emphasize the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and continuous learning within my team. We engage in regular team-building activities and skill-based volunteering, which not only helps the community but also fosters a more unified and inclusive culture. Encouraging open dialogue and recognizing each team member's contributions are also key practices that build trust and collaboration.
How do you approach mentorship and fostering the growth of others, particularly other women, in your company?
Mentorship is a cornerstone of my leadership approach. I believe in the power of reverse mentoring, where younger employees share their fresh perspectives with senior leaders. This not only enriches strategic thinking but also empowers younger team members. I am committed to providing opportunities for growth and development, ensuring that women in my company have access to the resources, training, and support they need to advance their careers.
What are you most proud of achieving with your company?
I am most proud of the strategic ESG transformation we have led at Kaleidoscope, shifting from traditional CSR to a robust framework that integrates social impact, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This pivot not only aligned with our corporate goals but also resonated deeply with stakeholder expectations, marking a significant milestone in our company's history. Additionally, the positive impacts we've seen in the communities we serve and the recognition we've received from esteemed organizations are truly rewarding.
How are you using your platform to empower other women or promote positive change?
Through Kaleidoscope, we actively promote sustainability and social impact, inspiring others to take meaningful action. We highlight the stories of diverse leaders and provide workshops on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. Our mission is to empower women by showcasing their achievements and providing the tools and knowledge needed to drive positive change. I also engage with my 40K strong social media audience to raise awareness and foster a community committed to making the world a better place.
Can everyone become an entrepreneur? Why or why not?
While I believe that many people have the potential to become entrepreneurs, it's not for everyone. Entrepreneurship requires a unique blend of resilience, risk-taking, and a relentless drive to solve problems. It's a demanding path that often involves navigating uncertainty and overcoming significant challenges. However, with the right support, resources, and mindset, those who are passionate and committed can certainly thrive as entrepreneurs.
