What does the NY State Assembly Do?

  • Lawmaking: The Assembly, along with the State Senate, is responsible for proposing, debating, and passing laws for New York State. These laws cover a wide range of issues, including taxes, education, healthcare, business regulations, and environmental protection.

  • Budgeting: The Assembly plays a crucial role in approving the state budget, which allocates funds for various government programs and services. This budget can significantly impact the business environment and access to resources for entrepreneurs.

  • Oversight: The Assembly has oversight power, holding hearings and investigations to ensure that state agencies are functioning effectively and efficiently. This can be relevant to entrepreneurs if it involves issues like business licensing, permit processes, or consumer protection regulations.

  • Constituent Services: Assembly members represent specific districts within the state. They address concerns raised by their constituents, which can include entrepreneurs facing challenges or seeking guidance on navigating state regulations.

How Can Entrepreneurs Get Involved?

  • Stay Informed: Follow the Assembly's website https://nyassembly.gov/ to stay updated on proposed legislation, committee hearings, and upcoming votes. This allows you to understand how potential laws might impact your business.

  • Contact Your Assembly Member: Identify the Assembly member representing your district and don't hesitate to reach out to them with your concerns or suggestions. Share your perspective on proposed bills or highlight issues you face as an entrepreneur.

  • Testify at Hearings: Assembly committees hold public hearings on proposed legislation. If a bill affects your business, consider submitting written testimony or attending a hearing to voice your opinion.

  • Support Advocacy Groups: Several advocacy groups focus on issues relevant to entrepreneurs. Getting involved with these groups allows you to join forces with others and amplify your voice on policy issues.

  • Run for Office: Consider running for the Assembly yourself! This would allow you to directly influence legislation and advocate for policies that support the entrepreneurial community in New York.
