“Let's Talk Impact” Podcast With Nina Kong-Surtees @ SmART Advisory Who Aims To Enrich The Artistic Journey For Emerging Art Collectors

Who is Nina Kong-Surtees?

Nina Kong-Surtees is the Founder and Chief Art Legacy Advisor of smART Advisory. As an Art Legacy Advisor and independent art historian, she aims to enrich the artistic journey for emerging art collectors by curating exceptional collections that ignite imagination, provoke thought, and evoke emotion. Through Nina’s dedication to innovation and curation, she empowers collectors to build legacies that reflect their unique identity, values, and creative spirit.

Prior to establishing smART Advisory in 2016, Nina wore many colorful hats while developing legacy plans and business strategies for artists at renowned artist endowed estates/foundations, nonprofit art centers, art galleries and museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Coming from a family of artists, Nina has always been curious about the art-making process, the meaning of the work and career path of artists at a very young age. For over 20 years in the art world, she noticed the challenges of being a professional artist and frustrated with the myth of the “starving” artists. After taking a brief detour from the arts, she worked in the tech, design, and beauty industries, where she started to integrate entrepreneurial principles in the fine art industry.

Nina is a Supporter of Skowhegan Council, member of Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD), member of Professional Women in the Arts (POWarts), member of The Fourth Effect (formerly The Fourth Floor), and Founding member of Dreamers & Doers.

Dive into the Depths: A Guide for Beginning Art Collectors

The allure of the art world beckons – captivating colors, thought-provoking ideas, and a chance to connect with the creative spirit. But for those new to collecting, the process can seem daunting. Fear not, aspiring art enthusiasts! This guide will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to begin your artistic adventure.

Finding Your Focus:

  • Passion over Price: Let your personal taste be your compass. What stirs your emotions? Bold abstracts or intricate landscapes? Figurative works or installations? Explore museums, galleries, and online platforms to discover styles and artists that resonate with you.

  • Define Your Budget: Collecting art is an investment, but it doesn't have to break the bank. Set a realistic budget and stick to it. Remember, starting small allows you to build a diverse collection over time.

Navigating the Art World:

  • Gallery Gems: Galleries are a great starting point. Visit established galleries and artist-run spaces to view works in person, ask questions, and learn about the artists. Attend gallery openings – they offer a chance to mingle with artists, collectors, and curators.

  • The Power of Research: Research the artists you admire. Look for established artists with a proven track record or exciting emerging talents on the rise. Learn about their artistic process, inspiration, and past exhibitions.

Building Your Collection:

  • Invest in Quality: While affordability is important, prioritize quality over quantity. Look for pieces created with good materials and proper technique. A well-made artwork will stand the test of time, both aesthetically and in terms of value.

  • Consider the Long Game: Building a collection takes time and dedication. Don't rush into purchases. Take time to reflect on a piece before committing. Consider factors like how it will fit in your space and complement your existing collection.

Emerging Collector Perks:

  • Art Fairs: Art fairs offer a vibrant marketplace to discover new artists and galleries. Look for fairs with sections dedicated to emerging artists, often at more accessible price points.

  • Online Resources: Several online platforms cater to emerging collectors. Explore curated collections and research tools to find hidden gems and connect directly with artists.

Remember, collecting art is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the process of discovery, learning, and surrounding yourself with works that inspire you. Here are some bonus tips:

  • Don't be afraid to bargain: Galleries are often open to negotiation, especially for emerging artists.

  • Get it in writing: Always obtain a certificate of authenticity from the gallery or artist.

  • Care for your collection: Proper storage and handling will ensure your artwork endures for years to come.
