BASED IN: NEW YORK + NEW JERSEY
What is your background? How did it help you get to where you are today?
I became interested in health and fitness after I gained and lost a significant amount of weight freshman year of college. Once I successfully lost the weight I started to write about health and fitness as a way to stay engrossed and self educate myself. I eventually became a certified fitness professional and paired my BA degree in Psychology to create Nadia Murdock Fit.
When did you realize you wanted to be self-employed? Did you take your time in taking the step or did you just go for it?
I think I always knew I wanted to be self-employed. Since I can remember I have always done something in addition to my full-time job, whether it was freelance marketing gigs or writing opportunities. Even at the age of 12 I started a babysitting club, a jewelry making business and baking club. So when it came time for me to take the full plunge and start Nadia Murdock Fit, it felt right. I definitely took my time creating my company, creating the fundamentals of NMFIT and networking with other business owners.
Why did you decide to present yourself as a brand VS making up a name and starting a company that way?
The best advice I got was to name my company/brand with my own name, no one can mimic or steal that! I also think I am walking billboard of my brand. I created Nadia Murdock Fit in order to help others, my story is why I created my company. I want to help people change their lives by training their minds and bodies.
How important is having a mentor/ like minded people in your life? Would you say having a strong network is important for your business? Can you share a tip on how to grow your personal network?
It’s extremely important to surround yourself with like minded individuals. This is an excellent way to stay motivated, discover new business tactics and ideas! Networking is everything!! Meeting new people can help you tap into a market/audience that you may not have been able to reach on your own. Joining networking groups, attending events and social media are excellent ways to grow your circle.
What is the most important thing to consider before going on your own?
Success takes time. Persistence is key. Work hard, meaning work smart! Spend time and effort on projects that will better your company in the long run.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t be scared to ask for what you want! Another thing I wish I learned earlier was don’t put too much thought into what people think!
