The Challenger Brand Whisperer: Allison LaGuardia on Building Businesses That Steal Market Share
I'm Allison LaGuardia, founder and owner of ALL Media. We're a full-service media strategy firm that helps ambitious startup and emerging brands punch above their weight class to become category leaders.
Too often, smaller brands without big marketing budgets get drowned out by larger, deeper-pocketed competitors. That's where we come in. Drawing from my decades of experience developing breakthrough media campaigns for upstarts, we provide specialized cross-channel expertise to strategically amplify brand voices.
Our integrated media strategies combine the best of traditional and non traditional channels - from connected ads and OOH installations to influencer marketing and Tik Tok Shops campaigns. We leverage proprietary data and tailor each plan to maximize impact based on the brand's unique goals and audience.
With long-standing industry relationships securing optimal rates and unique “white-space” opportunities, we deliver maximum bang for the marketing buck.
Basically, we level the playing field - guiding challenger brands to stand out, scale rapidly, and steal market share from stale incumbents. If you've got the next game-changing product or vision, we're the integrated media partner to make it an undeniable success story.
What is the biggest misconception you've encountered about being a female entrepreneur?
I think one of the biggest misconceptions people have about me being a female entrepreneur is that they assume it must be challenging or that I face extra obstacles because I'm a woman. Don't get me wrong - there are definitely some unique challenges that come with being a woman in a male-dominated business world. But I try not to dwell on that too much.
At the end of the day, running a successful business comes down to having a great product or service, working incredibly hard, and never giving up on your vision. Gender doesn't really enter into it. I've had to develop a thick skin, trust my instincts, and push past any doubters or naysayers along the way. Just like any entrepreneur really.
What people don't always see is the incredible amount of determination, passion and just sheer perseverance it takes to launch a company from the ground up and turn it into something sustainable and profitable. It's an around-the-clock job that becomes your life in a lot of ways. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Being able to create something from scratch and watch it grow and thrive is one of the most rewarding experiences.
What is your biggest piece of advice for overcoming self-doubt?
Self-doubt is something every entrepreneur struggles with at some point or another. Those nagging voices of insecurity creep in telling you that you don't have what it takes or that you're in over your head. But overcoming that self-doubt is one of the most critical things you can do.
For me, the biggest thing that helps is reminding myself of how far I've already come. When I look back at where ALL Media started - just good old fashioned grinding out calls and meetings - and see how much I've built and grown the business, it gives me an enormous sense of pride and confidence. I didn't let self-doubt stop me then, and I can't let it hinder my future growth either.
It also helps to have a strong support system of people who believe in you and your vision. Surrounding yourself with positive voices, whether it's my husband or trusted friends, mentors, or even my children who see how hard I work and the rewards that come from my business can provide so much motivation when you're feeling unsure of yourself. Don't be afraid to lean on them in those moments.
At the end of the day though, overcoming self-doubt comes down to having an unshakable belief in yourself. You have to be your own biggest cheerleader and source of confidence. I always tell myself 'If not me, then who?' I'm the one driving this ship, and I can't let fear hold me back from my full potential.
Work-life balance can be a constant struggle for entrepreneurs. How do you manage your time and maintain a healthy balance?
Oh man, work-life balance? That's the holy grail every entrepreneur is constantly chasing, am I right? It's definitely an ongoing challenge to juggle running a growing business while also trying to have a somewhat normal life outside of work.
The reality is, as an entrepreneur, the two worlds are pretty blurred together a lot of the time. When you're so passionate about what you do and have put your blood, sweat, and tears into building something from the ground up, that 'work' mindset doesn't really turn off once you leave the office. I'm constantly thinking about clients or ideas or marketing opportunities in my head. It's just part of the package.
But at the same time, I know how crucial it is to have balance and make time for the other important things in life - spending quality time with family and friends, taking care of my health, enjoying activities that recharge my batteries. Otherwise, I'd just burn out completely. I am very aware of knowing when I am close to burning out and when to take a break and recharge.
When I'm fully engaged in personal time, I try to be present and not let my mind drift to work as much as humanly possible.
Is it perfect? Definitely not. There's always going to be some bleed over. But overworking myself into the ground wouldn't do me or my business any favors in the long run. It's an ongoing process to strive for that elusive work-life balance, but I'm committed to making it a priority. Because at the end of the day, working hard for what really matters (family, friends, myself) is why we do what we do.
Beyond financial success, what does "success" mean to you as a female founder?
You know, when I first started ALL Media boutique, I'll admit that financial success and just seeing the business grow and become profitable was my main definition of 'making it.' All that hard work and sacrifice had to pay off with being able to build something sustainable, right?
But the longer I've been on this entrepreneurial journey, the more I've come to realize that true success has to mean so much more than just the numbers. Sure, financial security and achieving those big revenue goals are incredibly important. But they aren't the sole defining factor.
To me, a huge part of success is the sense of empowerment and pride I feel as a female founder running my own show. It's about proving to myself that I have just as much grit, determination and leadership capability as anyone else. It's showing my daughter and other young women that they can dream big and achieve anything they set their minds to.
Most of all though, success means doing something that I'm deeply passionate about every single day. Waking up feeling fulfilled and excited to go to "work" because it doesn't really feel like work when you absolutely love what you do. That's true wealth to me - and no dollar amount can put a price on that feeling.
So yes, while financial success is incredibly important, true success for me as a female entrepreneur has to encompass so much more. It's about backing up my ambition with action, leading by example, and building a legacy I can be proud of.
What is one thing that most people agree on that you don’t?
One thing that most people seem to agree on that I just can't get on board with? This idea that you have to choose between having a successful career or being a present parent and family person. That it's basically impossible to "have it all" without major sacrifices in one area or the other.
From the moment I decided to launch ALL Media, I was determined to shatter that outdated notion. Why should women in particular have to pick one extremely important life aspiration over the other? It's an unfair double standard that men rarely seem to face.
In my experience, you absolutely can build a thriving business that you're passionate about while still making your family a top priority. It's all about time management, setting boundaries, and most importantly, not buying into the societal guilt-tripping that tries to make you believe you're somehow failing at one or the other.
Does it take a heroic amount of effort, energy and careful prioritizing? Absolutely. There are definitely times when work has to take a back seat if my kids need me, and vice versa. But that's just part of the dance for any parent and employee or entrepreneur.
One day I was enroute to JFK for a business trip at my former company. Both my sons ages 11 and 9 went sledding and one after the other hit a patch of ice and BOTH broke their clavicle. My husband took them to the emergency room and I was texting my boss who I was meeting at the airport for the trip. She never said to me “go home and be with your boys”. I struggled the whole way to the airport and made it to JFK got my ticket, was waiting in security line and looked at my boss and said “no, I need to go home”. I called the car service to turn around and come back and get me. I look back on that story all the time and think, wow, I was so committed and so afraid of my job security that I chose work over family that day.” “Who was I then”?
Now that they are older, they see their mom chase her entrepreneurial dreams while still being an engaged, present parent sends such a powerful message to my kids about work ethic, perseverance and not letting societal norms dictate their own measure of success.
So no, I don't subscribe to this idea that you can't be both a kick-ass businesswoman and an involved mom or family person. Not only is it possible, but disproving those outdated notions is a huge driver for me. I'm doing it my own way and showing that you really can have it all with the right mindset.
