BASED IN: KENYA Based in Kenya, I am a media and tech leader in the region and have founded two companies in the past few years.Asphalt & Ink is a strategic advisory firm that works with clients across Africa. MumsVillage is an online platform that empowers African women to make informed choices for the health and well being of their families through access to locally relevant content, communities and resources. BASED IN: BRAZIL Our office develops architecture and interior design projects in Recife, Pernambuco as well as in the countryside. Our projects always prioritize the client’s individuality and the use of creativity, technicality and sustainability. We are 4 co-founders who graduated college together in 2011 with the pre-existing idea of starting our own business. So, one year later we left our jobs and started working together.  We didn't have much support and the initial investment was really low, so the first workspace we rented was very small and uncomfortable. However, in 2014 we moved to a bigger workspace in a good location with a rooftop and a beautiful view of the city.

For ten years, I worked with international non-profits in the economic development sector. I designed, sold and executed development projects aimed at empowering low-income communities to establish and grow sustainable business models. I also conducted field research on gender equality and its impact on women’s business growth, and designed gender integration strategies for a wide range of development projects. (...) Inspired by the innovative business models that I had seen in my work – in particular some pioneering, socially conscious artisanal brands like Gone Rural of Swaziland – I decided to put what I had learned into practice, combining my development experience with my passion for women’s empowerment, and my lifelong love of design. I decided to become a direct agent of change. My work now touches a much smaller number of women, but the direct impact that I have on their lives, and the impact that they have on mine, is much more profound.

We are Maggie and Lily of Thistle & Spire a Brooklyn based lingerie company supporting women in pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and melting hearts.   We have always believed that lingerie is for yourself.  As awkward teens growing up we found power in lingerie. That tiny secret to give you an extra confidence boost.  No one was interested in kissing us as teens, let alone see our underwear!  So lingerie became truly for us.  We juxtapose luxe fabrics and alluring architectural details mirroring the multi-faceted sides of being a woman. After all, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. What is failure? Do you think it’s a crucial step to success? Failure is making the wrong decision.  Everyone fails one way or another. It is ok to fail.  Never be afraid to fail or have that fear hold you back.  It is more so what you do post-failure that matters.  Don’t get lost in the fire, instead let it light your way forward.

What was the inspiration behind starting Kali Active?  My inspiration was this growing demographic of women who were redefining and breaking stereotypes of what women's roles in society should be.  Words like "strong', "fighter", "smart" and "fearless"  are being normalized by these women and that just gave me motivation to explore what that was in the sportswear industry.  I felt like there was more room to explore and celebrate these women from a brand perspective. What excites you about the fashion industry?   I've been in this industry for a long time and even though I've seen it go through it's stages the current change in the past few years have been the most exciting.  The innovation, technology and content story telling is really what's redefining it.  I think the new ways of bringing product to market and the less is more mentality is also something I'm happy to see.

At the ‘Squirrelz’, we believe in reducing waste through creativity. Our current project is a FREE material sharing app for designers. Designers can find free material nearby on the app and list their own leftover fabrics, trimmings and buttons for others to create with. Save money and the environment! Start browsing the free design materials in your neighborhood right now by downloading the Squirrelz app for iOS! What do you think of the stereotype that entrepreneurs are workaholics? Entrepreneurs needs to be workaholics: we are working to accomplish and build our vision with little to no funding. This means we have to bust our behinds to survive, but I do try to take the occasional time for myself to engage in fun, free activities near me.

Croissant gives you 24/7 access to co-working spaces on-demand in New York City. We provide a flexible and affordable monthly membership for freelancers, entrepreneurs, or anyone who is looking for a place to work on the next big thing. There are 22 locations to choose from, and using the website or mobile app, it’s super simple to enjoy co-working anywhere. Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur? Do you come from a family of entrepreneurs? My parents are entrepreneurs, but not in the traditional sense. My parents immigrated to the US from Thailand with nothing to their name in the 80s. They worked hard, from the bottom up, and have told me some crazy stories like living in a 1BR apartment with 10 other people in order to save up money for a car. They struggled for many years until they were able to get good jobs with stable incomes, and provide for my brother and me. Although I didn’t quite dream about quitting my job and starting my own company, my parents’  hard work has always inspired me and pushed me to do more.

Revel Systems is an iPad based Point of Sales system for restaurants, retailers, stadiums, events etc. The company was founded in 2010. The product is a software for recording sales at the point of purchase and manage inventory. The software integrates with third party vendors and can also be customized as needed. Some of the big names that use Revel systems include Tully’s coffee, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and also retailers like Belkin. We recently partnered with Apple and Intuit.  How did you find your calling? I was always interested in business and had an urge to do my own thing. I tried regular jobs at big firms and realized I did not fit in. A quote that aptly summarizes how I felt, is one by Theodore Roosevelt. The quote, summarized, says it is better to be in the arena fighting the battle rather than be a bystander on the stands. The quote helped me think about how to come to terms with failure. I went out and kept trying different things. First, I started a distribution company for Brazilian bathing suits. Then there was the children's toy and then there was the website that let experts sell lessons and monetize their skill sets. I like restaurants and noticed their ordering system isn’t seamless. That was the genesis of this idea.

I’m one of the co-founders of def hacks(), a 24 hour biannual hackathon for high school students by high school students. Our mission is to try to help high school students of all backgrounds and experience levels work on their computer science skills and facilitate them getting involved in the world of technology. Myself and my co-founder, Emily Redler, noticed the lack of resources for beginning high school hackers at coding events, such as hackathons, and decided to alleviate the problem with our own hackathon, catered to the wants and needs of the typical high schooler. Since October of 2015, over 400 students have been reached by def hacks() at events in New York City, Edison, NJ, San Francisco, and Seattle. We want as many aspiring coders to be taught and brought into the def hacks() community as possible, and that’s why def hacks() continues to expand across the country while also preserving its legacy.

I teach small business owners and startups how to leverage the power of social media to build successful brands and grow their revenue. I spent seven years developing profitable social media strategies for Fortune 100 brands.  Although this work was often satisfying, it lacked the gravity I needed in my life to feel like I was making a positive impact in the world. I launched Social Circle because I see so many aspiring and intelligent entrepreneurs struggling to create impact for their businesses due to limited resources and knowledge. My goal is to inspire, educate, and empower small business owners and startups to achieve their business goals.

In 2009, Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, which once was considered the 8th world wonder almost died. This lake is where I was baptized, it's where I learned how to swim, and it's where my grandparents lived.

Overnight, toxic blue green algae covered almost every inch of the lake. NASA called it one of the worst natural disasters to occur in our lifetime as you could see the contamination from space. I knew I needed to help and bring beauty and business back to this thriving lake.

On that trip, I saw little girls collecting the contaminated water as they had no other choice. I went to the local markets and they were empty as tourists had stopped coming.

Ix Style (pronounced "eye ex") started as a simple idea to help one woman and morphed into working with over 600 women around Lake Atitlán. Ix is a for-profit, charitable fashion company that sells huarache sandals, handbags and jewelry made in Guatemala where my family is originally from. For every purchase, we donate to provide clean drinking water to children in Guatemala.
